Sonic Frontiers is a 2022 platform game developed by Sonic Team and published by Sega. Players assume the role of Sonic as they embark on a journey to collect the Chaos Emeralds scattered across the Starfall Islands, following Sonic and his friends' separation after falling through a wormhole. This installment integrates traditional Sonic elements like platforming, collecting rings, and grinding on rails into the series' first-ever open world. While traversing this expansive environment, players can take on challenges, battle robotic foes, and access "Cyber Space" levels inspired by previous Sonic games.

The Vision Behind the Game

Following the release of Sonic Forces in 2017, Sonic Team sought a fresh approach for their next game. Takashi Iizuka, the head of Sonic Team, aimed to make Frontiers a model for future Sonic titles, akin to how Sonic Adventure influenced the series in 1998. Sonic Team decided on an open-ended design and concentrated on adapting Sonic's signature abilities to this new open world. The game was officially announced in December 2021.
